2013 Fishing Reports

January 13th, 2013
  • 2 Knuckleheads find the Humpback Sea Bass!
  • After waking up early Saturday, to see bad sea conditions we decided to go back to bed to and wait until Sunday.  Then Sunday morning came and the fog was dense as can be.  Being a little reluctant at the dock we decided to still go out and trust the electronics.  Sure glad we did.
  • After breaking through Fire Island inlet around 7:30am we were glad to "see" the calm ocean and we gunned it to our fishing spot.  We started fishing after 9am and immediately we had big Sea Bass on.
  • We made a couple drifts to decided where the best place would be to anchor.  Once we anchored, it was lock n load fishing.
  • 4 to 5 lbers were common.  When we would swing a bit, Bergals were a bit annoying, but we quickly figured a solution; use them for bait.  That quickly produced large fish and prevented the announce of losing the bait quickly.  We also caught them on jigs and curl worm teasers.
  • The largest Sea Bass of the day was caught using bergal strips.  The fish weighed 6.5lbs.  On top of that, he spit up a whole bergal once we got him on the boat.  And yes, I cannot forget to mention that the pool was caught by my Dad!
  • The Sea Bass were spiting up very interesting things, a worm like creature (may be a sea cucumber), hermit crabs still in their shells, and a bird.  YES A WHOLE BIRD was spit-up by one of my 5+lbers.
  • We ended that day catching over 30+ Sea Bass, keeping 22 of the largest.  We could have easily kept our limit, but we threw back any fish that was under 17" (3lbs).  We also caught a Cod that was around 8lbs and a larger conger eel.
  • Great way to end our season.  Motors were winterized today.  Have to wait until March to get back out there

  • We headed to a wreck in 75' of water southwest of 17 fathoms with only a couple bites, but no takers.  We didn't get right on the wreck.
  • We then decided to head to one of our spots at 17 fathoms.  We saw dolphins swiming by in the beginning and took it to be a good omen.
  • In about an hour, we caught 12 blacks and 4 were keeper size.  Much better quaility fish.  Lost 2 big fish.  The dog fish were there too since we were swinging a little, but not too bad.
  • Decided to head beack since the weather was deteriorating.

  • Went out of Huntington for Blackfish.  Felt good to get out after working 25 days straight.
  • A little wind, but not to bad for blackfishing and we headed to one of our favorite spots,  It was a bit slow as the fish were very picky.  The ones we caught were very pale.  We cuaght 15, keeping 2 to 17".
  • Went ot another wreck in 65' of water, but same senario as first wreck.  Caught another 7 blacks.
  • Boats fishing in deeper water 80' did well day before.

HURRICANE SANDY!

October 27th, 2012
  • Went to the North Shore again for Blackfish.
  • Went to the same spot we ended last week on the CT side.  We adjusted several times to cover different depths, 12-18'.
  • We caught 57 blackfish to 7+lbs.  Again jigs with Asains worked great.  A lot of small fish though too.
  • We decided to head back a little early, but then decided to try a spot by LI in 23' of water.  Lock n load right away with all fish being qaulity size including the throwbacks.  We caught another 18 keeping 3 more to limit out.
  • Ended the day with 75 fish, keeping 8 up to 7+lbs.  Released others that were keeper size.

October 20th, 2012
  • Went to the North Shore out of Northport for Blackfish.
  • We went over to the CT side and started fishign in 17-20' of water.
  • It was so calm, no wind and very little drift that we didn't even anchor.  We caught 38 blacks, keeping 1 on our first spot.
  • We decided to move about 1/4 mile and anchor on another piece in 15/16' of water.  It was lock n load right away.
  • We caught another 59 blacks keeping 6 more to 5+lbs.
  • Tidal jigs with asians did the trick.  Conventional style also worked, but jigs produced the bigger fish
  • We ended the day with 97 blacks, keeping 7 up to 5lbs.  We threwback several in the 14-16" range.

  • Sent Sea Bass Fishing out of FI Inlet.
  • We first tried around our wreck, but nothing going.
  • Went to a wreck east of FI Inlet and had steady action right away.
  • We caught several quality Sea Bass drifting around the wreck.  We decided to anchor on the wreck and the fish seemed to slow down and the quality changed.
  • We caught 42 Sea Bass on that wreck with 9 being quailty keepers over 5lbs.  We threwback several that we could have kept.
  • We then headed further South to another wreck and caught another 12 Sea Bass keeping 2 decent size.
  • We then decided to check out the NA Bouy, I casted a spro jig and let it sink for 5 seconds, within a second of reeling I was hit hard and the reel started to scream..... Not sure what I caught, but it was about 2 feet long and looked like a jack/tuna.
  • Drifted several more times around the bouy to catch about a dozen what we thought are blue runners, another jack like fish and one Trigger fish.

September 14th, 2012
  • TUNA TRIP!
  • We left FI inlet about 3:30am, but the lack of visibility preveted us from running full speed.  Once we could see, we open the throtles and got the tip of Hudson Canyon around 7ish.
  • Started trolling around the northern/eastern part of the tip for an hour with no takers.
  • We picked up and ran to 100 square.  We trolled for several hours with no takers.  There was plenty of life, dolphins, pilot whales, lots of boats.
  • The radio was pretty dead with only 1 or 2 reports of big eyes.
  • We tried one drop for Tile fish, 700'+, but no drift... LONG WAY DOWN AND LONGER WAY UP!
  • We hit several lobster pots on the way back, catching many Mahi Mahi for the dinner table.

September 3rd, 2012
  • We went ouf FI inlet insearch of Fluke.
  • The East wind made it lousy conditions, 20+ knots.
  • Tried just east of the inlet, but too fast of a drift.  Saw a shark finning and then leap out of the water.  Tired to catch it, but no luck.
  • We decided to pound into the waves to get to the reef to try to salvage the day.
  • We caught about 24 Sea Bass, keeping 4 up to 3.5lbs.

July 8th, 2012
  • First Scuba Diving trip off our boat and first dive in Long Island waters.  Brought my wife and Scott as dive partners and had another visitor from out-of-state, Francis, as a helper.  We decided to dive on the Hempstead Reef.
  • I was the first to get ready and jump in the water.  I couldn't even see my flippers.  Once we were all in the water, we started to descend into the absis.  Felt the thermocline within 15' from the surface and we were all alittle concerned that there was no visibilty, so we surfaced.  My wife decided to pass, but Scott and I said lets at least get down to the bottom and see if the visibilty gets better.
  • Once we got 20' from the bottom, the visibilty opened up and we could see the bottom.  So glad we did!
  • We were diving on an old war tank and some armored vehilces.
  • We saw tons of Sea Bass, small and average size, bergals, a large american/silver eel, and probably the largest Blackfish I have ever seen, too bad they weren't in season.
  • I missed one big Sea Bass on the speargun, probably 5+ lbs and then I got one that was about 3.5lbs.
  • We surfaced and my Dad and Francis fished some during our surface interval.  They caught several small Sea Bass.
  • Scott and I tried to go on a second dive, but when we went down, we had swung off the wreck and we did some bottom exploring.
  • We then ran into some bunker pods when we surfaced and my Dad got striper around 25/30 lbs.
  • We chased the pods around for alittle bit, but only had a couple run-offs, but no takers.
  • Finished the day fishing insdie for Fluke, catching several throwbacks and 2 keepers.

June 30th, 2012
  • Went out of FI inlet with my Dad and wife for Sea Bass.
  • We fished around the FI Reef.  We drifted over several wrecks and only landed a dozen Sea Bass.
  • We then decided to anchor over one piece and we caught maybe dozen more.
  • After the lack of size and quantity, we decided to head further east to a wreck in deeper water.
  • We immediately had action and some decent size, but that quickly stopped once we anchored; weird.
  • We continued to pick away at a couple fish.
  • At the end of the day we caught about 40 Sea Bass, keeping 8 and 12 ling, keeping 2.

June 24th, 2012
  • Went out of FI inlet with my Dad and brother.  We went right at sunrise; at dock 4:30am.
  • Found a bunker pod just east of the inlet.  Snagged a couple bunker.  Left one snagged and almost immediately hooked up with a Stripped Bass, 35lbs (released).
  • Took a couple minutes but found another pod with no boats and immediately the live bunker on the bottom got taken, 29lb Stripped Bass (released).  We had a couple more run-offs, but no takers.
  • Then the entire fleet was out and it was only 5/5:30.  Way to many boats and the pods were very "shy".
  • Then headed west to Hempstead Reef for Sea Bass.  After trying several spots and drifting over many, we only caught a dozen or so Sea Bass.
  • After seeing lack of action, we headed to the Fire Island Reef.  We drifted over a couple wrecks and finally anchored over one piece.  Caught another dozen or so and landed one that was 4lbs 15oz.
  • In total, 8 keeper Sea Bass and 2 Stripped Bass (released).

  • Tried 2 more spots and didn't have much luck with the flounder, just small sea bass and blackfish
  • Tried one last wreck that we remembered being muddy around back in the fall.  Glad we did.
  • Within 1 hour we caught 6 more keeper flounder up to 3.5lbs.  We kept our limit of 4 for the day

  • The day started out in tears as we finally were able to release the wreth in memory of my Papa!  We miss you!
  • Tried a wreck 30 miles out, 40 miles out, and 50 miles out, noth much doing.
  • The first cod at the first wreck was a nice 12.5lb keeper Cod, but then that was pretty much it.
  • We ended the day with 3 keeper cod, 5 throwbacks, and several garbage fish.
  • We towed a boat in that was fishing closer and they seemed like they had a good day.  Guess we should have tried closer first.

  • The wind was horribly at the dock and probably should have ween back home, but we decided to still go out... stupid.
  • We only fished 1 wreck about 20 miles out and caught all garbage fish.  The weather got worse and we packed it in.  BAD START TO SEASON!

July 16th, 2011
  • FIRST TUNA TRIP ON BOAT!!!!
  • Our hope was to jig for tuna and troll as a last resort.  Jigging hasn't established like last year (hopefully, yet), but the weather was nice and we've been itching to go, so we thought we go to the area of the Bacardi and give it a try.  Also, saw a few reports of boats fishing need Scallop dredges and catching fish in their slick.
  • We stopped at the Bacardi.  (60 miles out.)...No tuna action, so put some clam rigs down.  Nothing but some bergals!  Tried jigs.  Nothing.
  • We stopped at the Texas Tower...(about 70 miles out)...No tuna action, so put some down.  Nothing but some bergals!  Tried jigs.  Nothing.
  • Decided to go to the tip of the Hudson Canyon (80 miles out)...Along the way, saw a whale jump.  Saw some dolphin, even had them riding our bow wake.  At the Canyon, saw a few boats trolling, without success.  We trolled for a while and casted to some lobster pot buoys...nothing going on.
  • Never saw a Scallop dredge.
  • Heard reports of yellowfin tuna and even a blue marlin...got the numbers and it was another 21 miles south.  We were already 80 miles out, so I mixed that idea.
  • Came back by the Virginia (40 miles from shore).  A boat was anchored on it, didn't see them catch anything, so we kept going.
  • About another 5 miles closer, saw a small refrigerator floating and pulled 5 Mahi from it with spro jigs and squids strips.  Thank god!  What an amazingly beautiful fish.  Also saw the biggest Trigger fish I've ever seen but he simple stole ever bait we put in front of him.  I guess that's how he got so big.
  • Continued on to another wreck that we have had luck, but there was a boat anchored on it.  Saw them catch a couple or Sea Bass as we idled by.
  • Stopped at the Yankee and got a couple of throw back Cod.
  • Stopped at another wreck and got a couple of throwback Cod a a few keeper Sea Bass.
  • Stopped at the Fluke grounds where I cleaned the fish, but didn't fish long....no Fluke.
  • Left the dock at 3AM returned at 4PM and traveled 200 miles.
  • We ended up with 6 Mahi and a couple of Sea Bass.

July 8th, 2011
  • Just my Dad and I out this weekend.  Got a early start and tried for some stripped bass before heading to the fluke grounds,
  • No luck on the stripped bass.  Had 1 run-off but the schools seemed to be very scattered.
  • Head 6miles SW of FI inlet where the fleet was and found some Fluke quickly.
  • We ended the day with 3 keepers, 1 @ 22" (Tail bitten off by shark, would have been even bigger) & 2 @ 21".
  • Caught 1 big bluefish ~15lbs.

June 25th, 2011
  • Heard about the good fishing west of Mattituck Inlet, so my Dad, wife, and I took a ride and tried fishing up there for the first time.
  • Started off real foggy and didn't exactly know where to fish.
  • Made it out to Roanoke Shoal and found the fish early.
  • Played catch and release for the majority of the morning while catching a lot of short fluke, too many pesky sea robbins, and some bluefish.
  • Towards mid morning the fog lifted, but the wind stopped and there was hardly a drift and when there was it was against the tide.
  • Finally we got about 10 min of good wind and land the only keeper of the day; Dad - 21" fluke on large spro jig.  Spro jigs worked well on everything
  • End the day with 40 throwback fluke and 1 keeper.

  • We got 2 bass, 1 @ 25lbs & 1 @ 27".  They were both caught on Bunker underneath the schools off Gilgo/Tobay.
  • We then tried for some fluke around the FI reef, but it was wind against tide and we stopped pretty quck and called it a day.

May 22nd, 2011
  • I didn't make it out, but my Dad and his 2 friends, Bob & Jim, got out for some offshore cod.
  • They tried 2 wrecks as it was a bit choppy to get out further; 3-5' seas, very tight.
  • On  the closer wreck that caught a dozen cod and then the dogfish showed up.
  • They went to a wreck further out and found the cod.
  • No big ones, but they kept 23 cod and threw back about 24.

May 14th, 2011
  • Went to bed thinking we were going to Greenport for Fluke, but when we woke up we decided to try for Cod out of Fire Island instead. I am sure glad we did.
  • We tried about 7 or 8 different spots in various depths and every spot had cod on it. The deeper we went, the larger they got.
  • Again, doubleheaders were very common with bait and diamond jigs with and without tails worked just as good as bait, if not better at times.
  • The excitement of the day was when my Dad was using a Vi-ke jig and hooked into a monster. After about 15 minutes of struggling not getting line in and the fish constantly running to the bottom and away we were shocked to see a 30lb Pollock at the other end!!!!! I had just asked no more than 5 minutes before the hook-up, 'where/when do you catch Pollock'. This was by far the biggest Pollock I have ever seen. We tried for a good 20 minutes to revive the fish, but he was done. Thank you for that fight!
  • Just after catching the monster Pollock, I decided to use a Vi-ke jig myself. On the 2nd drift of using the jig, I myself hooked into another cow. This time it was a 19lb Cod! After taking a picture we released the fish to fight another day.
  • At the end of the day, we only kept 10 Cod for dinner and we caught at least 40 others. 30 of them were definitely keeper size, released to be caught another day.
  • I think you can definitely say Cod fishing will be even better next year!
  • Where are the Sea Bass? Not one was caught during our last 2 trips, will they be here for the opener?

May 1st, 2011
  • Finally, my Father and I got out for the first trip of the year on Sunday, May 1st. We left dock about 6am and after a beautiful boat ride on the ocean, we got to our first spot by 7. Within 3 hours, we had our limit of Cod up to 10lbs. For the rest of the day we played catch and release with about another 20 keepers and 20 throwbacks.
  • Throughout the day, doubleheaders of Cod were common. All the fish were caught on the drift and we never had to anchor. We caught Cod on all 4 drops and the deeper spots had bigger fish. We even stopped fishing with bait and started catching them consistently on Diamond Jigs. Green & orange teasers seemed to be the best, but yellow worked as well.
  • As only being 27 and always hearing the stories of the 'good old days' about the cod fishing, I finally got to enjoy and experience cod fishing. I think Cod are finally making a comeback

2010 Fishing Reports

December 18th, 2010

  • Got out yesterday with my Father and Grandfather for the last trip of the year. We got to the dock around 6:30 to find a nice thick skim coat of ice to break through. We started fishing around 8:30am after riding through a very choppy sea 2-3' (not like the 1' forecast).
  • Right away my Grandfather was putting keepers in the boat. He out fished my Dad and I as he put at least 3 keepers in the boat before we caught any. The fishing wasn't as good as last week or as in years prior. The tog were very finicky biters today and they came in sporadic groups. The Conger Eels/Ocean Pout were very annoying as we caught at least dozen or more.
  • We did manage to get our limit of 12 keeper Black fish up to 5lbs and we caught approximately 8 others that were keepers and another 10 or so throwbacks.
  • Well that is it for the Where's The Fish II until February/March. Hopefully we will get to uncover it for Cod Fishing.
  • Thank you to my Dad & Grandfather for another great fishing year!
  • Happy Holidays & Happy Near Years

December 11th, 2010
  • After 2 weeks of being kept off the water, my Dad and I finally got back out on the water.  My Dad's friend Bob also joined us today.
  • We got to the dock around 6:30 to find a small skim coat of ice on the water, but it wasn't a problem.  After some anchor tangling issue due from frozen anchor ropes, we started fishing around 8ish; I think.
  • We were into fish right away with with the pool fish for the day coming up as fairly early in the day, 7+lbs.  We fished 2 spots one in about 112'-116' of water and the 2nd spot ranged from 102'-111'.
  • At the end of the day we ended up with our limit of 12-blacks, 1 Cod, 1 Sea Bass, 2 Ling, and probably about 30 throwbacks (maybe 5-10 were keeper size).  The pool fish was a 7+lb Black, the Cod was 24.5'' and the Sea Bass was 4+lbs.
  • Jim- you missed a good day to be out there.  You would have had a 'good time' with Bob...

November 23rd, 2010
  • Both my Dad and I took the day off yesterday to get in on the good Striped Bass action and we weren't dissappointed!
  • While heading east, we marked bait along the entire coast line, but we didn't run into fish until we were 18 miles east of FI Inlet (13 miles west of Moriches Inlet). Fish were no more than a mile offshore and where in about 54' of water. (The party boats were going all over the place and wound up going far offshore too.)
  • From 9am to 2pm we were into fish the entire time. Pulling anywhere from 1 or 2 fish a drift to 10 fish a drift. Jig color didn't matter as a plain jig worked just as good as white, green, red, yellow.... Fish were spitting up sandeels and herring. We left them bitting for the long boat ride back to FI.
  • We ended the day with 84 Striped Bass and 15 Blue Fish. The biggest striped bass was 33/34 in. and weighed around 15-20lbs.
  • I think we had a great day!

October 11th, 2010

Report by Jim:
  • We fished on Monday looking to follow Saturday's great day.
  • The Stripers were still there but not as strong.  Fished till the bite died around 8:30am and then switched to Sea Bass. Had a steady pic as we culled thru the smaller ones looking for larger keepers.
  • Walt had a few nice keepers with a hefty trigger mixed in. Craig also landed impressive results. Bob however, impressed us all with his mix of porgies, snapper size bluefish, and sea robins, all returned to annoy him another day.
  • Thanks for a great day!

July 31st, 2010

July 24th, 2010
  • My Dad and I went out to Moriches for Fluke.
  • The inlet was nasty and we were kept inside.
  • We fished the East Jetty, West Jetty, Bouy 17/18, & bouy 15.
  • We ended the day with 1 keeper at 22" and about 50 throwbacks.  All fish were on green spro jigs and teasers.
  • The keeper spit up a medium size blue claw crab!!!!!!!

July 18th, 2010
  • My Dad and I went up to the North Shore, Smithtown Bay area for some morning Fluke.
  • We fished off the stacks, crab meadow, sunken meadow, and niss. river.  No keepers and about 20 shorts.
  • Around 11, we went back and picked up my Mom & my sisters family.  We took my 2 nieces out for there first fishing trip for porgies.

July 17th, 2010
  • Today we were visited by 2 friends again that wanted take a stab at fishing for some Sea Bass.  The 5 of us got out to the grounds and started fishing around 8.
  • Within 5 minutes, one of our friends got sea sick.  (Should have taken the Dramamie.)  We fished 2 hours and packed it up to get the "land-lover" back.  The seas were alittle sloppy.
  • Within 2 hours, we kept 10 up to 4.75lbs and all keepers were 15in or more.  We threwback over 2 dozen that were 12.5+ and had several other small fish.
  • Click to see Pictures of todays trip or go to the 2010 Fishing Photos.

July 9th, 2010
  • This weekend, I had 3 college buddies come visit for the weekend and they wanted to get some fishing in.  My Father and I decided to take them out for some Sea Bass.  Even though it is July, the reports still sounded decent for Sea Bass.
  • On the way out, we stopped at 2 bunker pods to try for some Striped Bass.  Even though we found the "mother-load" of bunker pods I have ever seen, there were no Bass to be found.  After fooling around for an hour and 1 run-off, we headed to the Sea Bass grounds.
  • We made several drifts over 4 different wrecks, picking up several keepers and shorts.  We finally anchored over the "fishest" wreck and we were into fish until 12pm.
  • We had 20 keepers up to 4+lbs.  We threw back over a dozen fish that were 12.5in - 13.5in along with tons of throwbacks.  There were still several small blackfish and suprisingly no porgies.
  • Click to see Pictures of todays trip or go to the 2010 Fishing Photos.

July 3rd, 2010
  • Got out Saturday with my Father for some Striped Bass fishing.
  • Went out of Fire Island Inlet and started locating bunker schools to the West.  Found huge bunker schools off of the Jones Beach Theater.
  • We got one Bass within an hour at 36lbs.  Unfortunately, the boat traffic picked up and it get too sunny and the Striped Bass seemed to dissappear.

June 12, 2010
  • Got out Saturday with my Father, Grandfather, Wife, and dog.  Sea Bass fishing was red hot again with the quality and quantity being the best it has been all year.
  • We made 1 drift over the wreck before we anchored and brought up 2 sets of nice keeper size double header Sea Bass.  4 keepers in less than a minute, I knew it was going to be a great day.  It was a one stop, one drop trip.  (I love only having to set & pick-up 2 anchors once.)
  • We had 48 keepers, with about a 1/3 or more in the 2.5-4lb range.  We threw back more than a dozen fish that were over the 12.5in limit along with many throwbacks.  There were still several small blackfish, but the porgies have started to invade the wrecks.
  • Great trip to probably end or Sea Bass fishing season until September.  Now its time to get jiggy with the Fluke (2 weeks).
  • Click to see Pictures of todays trip or go to the 2010 Fishing Photos.

June 5, 2010

  • Got out Saturday with my Grandfather & Father.
  • The inlet was a mess and the seas were sloppy until the afternoon.
  • We ran several miles out in the ocean and anchored on 2 wrecks and drifted around 2 others.  The fishing was not as fast as 2 weeks ago, but when the flurries came there were some good Sea Bass mixed in.
  • The 3 of us got 33 keeper Sea Bass with several around 3-4lbs with the pool fish at 5.4!  We had over 100 throwbacks again with a lot of small blackfish mixed in.
  • We entered the big fish into the dream boat challenge.  Hopefully it lasts or I get a bigger one!

May 29 - May 31, 2010
  • We will postpone this fishing season due to my Brother's Wedding.
  • Congratulations Steve!

May 22, 2010

  • Got out Saturday for the opening of Sea Bass and we were pleseantly suprised. Today my Dad and I were accompained by my wife and 2 of our friends. The weather was perfect, except for the sun not being out.
  • We ran several miles out in the ocean and fished 2 wrecks the whole day and had a boat load of fish.
  • We got 46 keeper Sea Bass and 1 keeper Cod! We had over 100 throwbacks including a couple dozen blackfish and a couple small cod all released.
  • The pool fish was about 4.5lbs with several other fish 3.5lbs to 4+lbs. (Didn't get that 5lber I released back in April.)
  • Saturday was a perfect day!

May 15, 2010

  • Went to Orient for the Fluke opener with my Father & Grandfather.  It was a nice day to start, but the wind picked up.  We knew it was going to blow, but it was a constant 20mph wind with gusts to 30 instead of 10-15 with gusts to 20.  To make matters worse, it was wind against the tide.
  • We started the day off good with the first keeper going 6.5lbs and another one soon after being 21.5".
  • We picked at 40 or so throwbacks for 1 more 21" keeper throughout the whole day.  The boat traffic and wind dampered the fluke opener.
  • We ended the day with 3 keepers to 6.5lbs and ~ 40 throwbacks.
  • Click to see Pictures of todays trip or go to the 2010 Fishing Photos.
April 24th, 2010
  • Went out Saturday for Blackfish and Cod with my Father and dog. We went about 10-15 miles out in the ocean to a couple wrecks we have.
  • The first drop started off with a surpirse with us catching 1/2 dozen or more cod, but only one was big enough to keep. We caught handful of blackfish, no keepers and we had another surprise of a early season JUMBO Sea Bass - a true 5lber!!! (Was released)
  • The 2nd and 3rd drop produced many blackfish and we got 3 keepers up to 8lbs. Too bad we had to leave them biting.
  • Spring blackfishing is a great challenge as they love to chew & chew & chew & jerk your rod like crazy, but they never suck the crab in like they do in the fall. Plent of swing & misses. Patience was key today!

 April 10th, 2010
  • Went out Saturday with my Dad and dog for Flounder in the GSB.
  • Unfortunately, the weather man was right about the wind and it even got worse than predicted.  The Great South Bay was like the ocean, 3-5' chop.
  • Tried in Dickerson's Channel for about 2 hours and end up with 1 short flounder.
  • We called it a day once we pulled up our anchors because we wound-up bending the boat anchor so bad that it wouldn't hold anymore.  Not a good day!
April 3rd, 2010
  • Went out Saturday with my Father, Grandfather, and dog Flounder fishing in the Great South Bay (Dickerson's Channel)
  • Started fishing around 8am and end at 1pm.
  • We caught about an hour of the outgoing and only landed 1 throwback.  Once the tide changed to incoming, we caught 9 keepers, keeping our limit of 6.  They ranged from 12.5-16 inches.  The biggest was about 1.5lbs.  We caught the fish on both mussel and blood wor,s, with mussel probably the bait of choice.
  • It felt good to actually catch some Flounder after hearing of all the remember whens, aka: "good old times!"

March 21st, 2010

  • 2010 Shake-down trip.
  • Went out of Fire Island looking for some Cod.  Let's just say we are still searching...
  • Tried various wrecks about 15-20 miles offshore.  Nothing but garbage fish, bergals, skates, and sculpin.
  • Felt great to be out again!!

March 7th, 2010
  • Uncovered the boat and put all the eletronics and gear back on the boat.... Hopefully we'll be out there in 1-2 weeks.  All that is left is to do is some maintenance on the engines.

March 1st, 2010
  • Somebody is a lucky guy and got to go to Fort Myers Beach in Florida.  What are you fishing for:  "Whatever jerks on the other side, I will jerk back!"  Got to love the Dad!

2009 Fishing Reports

December, 2009
  • Got out yesterday after a couple weeks of being stuck in the house due to the weather. My father and I decided to take a chance in going to 17 fathoms even though the weather looked questionable, but it is a good thing we did.
  • We made one drop all day and just moved around on the 2 anchors. My dad started the day off with a 9-lber within 10min of anchoring up. Within a 1.5 - 2 hours we had our limit We head back for Jones around 12pm. We probably caught around 15 keeper size and about a dozen throwbacks and several sea bass (released).
  • Sorry for the picture quality, forgot the real camera and had to use the cell phone.
  • We plan on getting out 1 more time on Saturday. Still looking for that double digit....

November 22nd, 2009
  • Decided to join the Striped Bass Bonanza on the south shore.
  • Fished with my Father far east of FI inlet. We tried several spots with birds and didn't find any fish until we were about 15/16 miles east of the inlet.
  • We fished primarily between 40-50' or water with dimond jigs. The fish were feeding on large sandeels. We had non-stop action of fish.
  • We ended the day with 4 stipers - 34" (16lbs), 31.5", 29", 27" and about 40 bluefish to 15lbs. All fish were released to fight another day.
  • (All color tails worked, but yellow seemed to be the best.) Another priceless day!

November 15h, 2009
  • Dad & I went out of Northport for Blackfish and couldn't ask for a nicer day.
  • Unfortunately, we got skunked and only caught a half dozen of throwbacks.  I think last weeks high winds and surf contributed to the horrible results.  Everyone else complained of the same problems.
November 7th, 2009
  • My grandfather, Dad & I went out of Northport for Blackfish.
  • We got our limit of 12 Blackfish.  Fishing was non-stop today with plenty of fish coming up all day long.

October 3rd, 2009
  • It's TAUG TAUG TIME!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Dad & I went out of Northport for Blackfish.
  • The wind was howling out of the South and it was raining everywhere except for the north shore.
  • We tried 2 shallow water spots just East of Easton's Neck with only one spot producing small blackfish and 1 14.75" keeper (released).
  • We then headed to the CT side to the spots where we have done great over the last couple of years, but typically later in the season.  We had a mixed bag of blacks, porgies, sea robins, and toad fish.  The only plus was getting 4 keeper Sea Bass.
  • We tried some other spots on the CT side and a high spot near 28C, but only small fish.
  • The water is stilll at 72 and is way to warm for the bigger black fish.  Will be back out next weekend.
  • Nothing worth of a picture today.

September 26th, 2009
  • Dad, dog, & I, went out of Fire Island trying for Striped Bass and Sea Bass.
  • The wind was howling out of the east, but the inlet was fine (ocean 4-6' seas).  Fished for Striped Bass for about 2 hours with no luck.
  • Switched over to Sea Bass and tried an inshore wreck west of RM Bridge.  About 50 small sea bass and 1 - 3lb keeper (released).
  • Decided to take the rough ride out to the FI Reef.  Fished for an hour catching small Sea Bass & Porgies and then called it a day.
  • Nothing worth of a picute today.

September 5th, 2009
  • Took the trip to Moriches with my Father and Grandfather.
  • Weatherman predicted 2-4' seas, but he was definitely wrong.  It was a beautiful day full of sunshine and flat seas.
  • We fished on several different pieces on the Moriches Reef.  Almost every spot had fish, but the were very very small.
  • We ended the day with 4 keeper Sea Bass to only 2lbs and 1 nice size trigger fish.
  • No false albies or spanish mackeral were to be found at Moriches.
  • No picutes today, sorry.

August 21st - August 28th  -  CLEARWATER/DUNEDIN, FLORIDA

  • Went to the Tampa area to visit family.  Got a couple days of diving, spear fishing, pier fishing, and 1 day of boat fishing.
  • Every fish up was a different species.
  • Go to the Florida tab for pictures (Coming Soon)

August 16th, 2009
  • Went to Fire Island, far ESE of Inlet with my Father, Wife, and dog.
  • Went all over the ocean on Saturday, South, South East, East of Inlet... trying to find the fluke.  We found tons bait, but the lack of a drift hurt.  We even tried power drifting which normally works, but the Fluke didn't want to bite (however, the skates didn't mind).
  • Finally, at about 1pm the wind picked up and we started to drift at .6knts.  Within 1 hour.  We had 4 nice keeper fluke with 3 at 24" ~ 5lbs.
  • Whole squid was the bait of choice for 3 of the 4 keepers.
  • We were even visited by some small sharks, (I think blue sharks).  As you can see in the picture below, some fluke didn't make it up to the boat in one piece.

August 8th, 2009
  • Took the trip to Montauk with my Father, Wife, and dog.
  • It was a beautiful day, not too hot, not too cold..  Seas were flat, except for the part of getting caught behind the shark tournament in the morning.
  • We fished the morning at Frisbees keeping 13 nice size Sea Bass to about 4/5lbs and 1 big Triggerfish.
  • We then ran West off Hitherhills and had very slow action.  We then ran back to the North Rips and caught several fluke.
  • We managed to 2 keepr fluke 23" or 5lb and  26"  6.75lbs.

  • Go to the ALASKA 2009 Tab to see report and pictures.

July 15th, 2009
  • Took the day off yesterday and we were not not dissapointed. The water was beautiful and flat in the morning. Got out of the inlet and found bunker pods to the west in about 40' of water.
  • Snagged one bunker and got it for live-lining. Go to snag the 2nd bunker and on the way to the boat got a striper and then my brother hooks up, 2 fish on 25lbs and 35lbs. I knew it was going to be a good day!!!
  • Fished for about 3 more hrs and got about a dozen striper from 23.5lbs to 43.5lbs. There were soo many bunker that the fishfinder showed them from the surface all the way down to the bottom at 40'. INSANE!
  • Dad took the honors today with his fat 43.5lb striper. Our biggest to date.
  • Once the sun came out and the wind picked up, the stripers got tired of having a fest I guess. We decided to change to fluke fishing. Tried west of the inlet, but all small fish. Head to the east a couple mile east of the FI reef in 90' of water. Had some fluke and one lonely keeper of 6.5lbs.
  • Overall, it was a beautiful day.  Endless fun with family on the water = PRICELESS!!!

July 11th, 2009
  • Went to Moriches for the first time for Fluke. The day started off beautiful with a very light wind. Unfortunately, the wind picked up drastically by mid morning and caused some very fast drifting conditions and chaged our drift pattern.
  • On the second drift of the day, I hooked into a nice one and landed a 8.4lb Fluke on a whole squid (the fish already had one in its stomack too). Lost another one probably just as big right after.
  • We caught many throwbacks throughout the day while only catching one more keeper at 22.5in 5lbs. Very tough conditions using 2 sea anchors and 12-14oz of lead.
  • I wish I knew about the Moriches Fluke Tournament because my 8.4lb would have one 1st Place... =(

July 4th, 2009
  • Due to the strong West wind, we went to the North Shore again instead of the Ocean.  It was a full boat with my Grandfather, Mother, Father, Wife, and dog.
  • Way too much wind today about 20kts.  Wind against tide in the morning, but at least the sun was out.
  • We caught about 50 fluke today with no keepers.  It hurt throwing back a 20.75" fluke...  Several fish were around 19-20".

July 3rd, 2009
  • First Fluke trip of the year.  Since we had such good success last year in July on the North Shore/Smithtown Bay, we decided to try it out again this year.
  • With very little wind, the drift was slow, but it was better than wind against tide.  There were way too many sea robins and some small blues.  Sand eels paved the waters
  • We fished for about 3 hours and caught about 12 fluke, 1 keeper 21.5" (the rest were at least 18" or bigger).  75% of the fish were caught on 2oz spro jigs.
  • Click to see Pictures of todays trip or go to the 2009 Fishing Photos.
June 27th, 2009
  • One last Sea Bass trip for the summer at Hempstead Reef again.  Fishing definitely has slowed down.
  • We drifted over several pieces throughtout the day and anchored on a couple.  Fished from 6:30am to 12:30am and caughet several Sea Bass, but mostly small fish

  • Sea Bass fishing at the Hempstead Reef.  My Grandfather and Aunt joined us for this trip.  The inlet was a little sloppy in the morning, but the water flattened out by mid morning and was beautiful; even when the rain came.
  • We drifted over several pieces throughtout the day picking fish all day until we finished at 12:30pm.  With no wind, the drifts worked very well.
  • We eneded the day with 28 keeper Sea Bass with several fish around 2.5/3lbs.  The qualiy of the keepers were the best yet as probably the shortest fish we kept was 13".
  • My grandfather was the fluke king during the trip catching several, with the biggest only being 20".  Other by-catch were small blackfish and ling.

  • Took a half day and decided to go fishing off the kayak for Fluke out of Fire Island for the last day.  Fished for 2-3 hrs in 16-20' of water east of the bridge on the north side of the bay.
  • Caught about 40 fluke, but no keepers.  Had 1 at 20', 2 at 19', and the rest were around 15-16'.
  • Ended the day early due to the nasty thunder and lightening to the north.  Got back to the truck just in time.
June 13th, 2009
  • Went Sea Bass fishing again at the Hempstead Reef.  This time my Grandfather joined us and good thing he did because I didn't pull my wait.  The water was beautiful and flat.
  • Drifted over several pieces in the morning when the tide and wind were not strong.  Once the wind picked up, we anchored over 3 different areas.
  • We eneded the day with 20 keeper Sea Bass with 3 fish to 4lbs.  Overall, this trip produced the best quality of keepers.  We caught some small blackfish, fluke, ling and a HUGE Silver Eel.

  • Wanted to go to Montauk for Fluke, but instead My Dad and I ended up going to the Hempstead Reef again for Sea Bass.  (Grandfather wasn't feeling well).  The weather was beautiful, but the wind against tide made it a hard to anchor even with 2 anchors.
  • Fished a couple pieces in the area and drifted for most of the day.  We wound up with 22 keepers with several around to 2.5 / 3lbs.

May 24th, 2009 (Air Show)
  • Went out to go see the air show and possibly fish.  Luckily there was fog in the morning which delayed the air show 3 hours allowing us to fish for Sea Bass once again.
  • Since we were off Jones Beach, we tried the Hempstead Reef for the first time.  After doing some searching for about 1 hour, we found a load of fish in about 50' of water.
  • Within 2 hours, we had 11 keeper sea bass to 2.5lbs and tons of throwbacks and some small blacks mixed in.

  • The weather started out beautiful, but had a little bit of wind agaist tide.  Fishind on the FI Reef in about 70' of water for sea bass.  Fishing was very good until the unpredicted wind picked up and blew at about 25-30kts from the east.  It become impossible to stay on the wreck.  Also, the dog fish started to find out bait.
  • We kept 13 Sea Bass to 3lbs and had several blackfish to 6lbs (all released) and a suprising cod (21.5", released).

  • Finally got out on the boat last night with my Father.  Fished from 5pm-7pm for some flounder.  Tried the sore thumb and obi pier for nothing, went to the west channel to catch last of the income and caught one.
  • On the way back to the dock, saw a group of birds and caught one bluefish on light tackle.
  • Sorry no pics tonight.

  • My Father, Grandfather, & Mother went out of Captree today for Flounder.  They fished several different spots in the west channel and caught 5 flounder.  All fish were caught in the morning on the incoming.  Stopped fishing by 12pm, but heard reports of the bite being better after 2pm on the outgoing (warm water flushing out).
  • The quality of the fish was much better.  All fish were 16 - 16 1/2 inches.  Very thick fillets.

  • Want to go out for some Sea Bass actoin, but since the wave forecast was horrible, we decided to take a quick seal watch run.  Brought my wife, mother, aunt, cousin and new dog for the ride.  We saw about 30 seals out on Demo Point in FI Inet.  The dog loved seeing the seals...

  • Went for the shake down today.  Beautiful morning, the Great South Bay looked like glass.  The seals were playing in the inlet.  Went out about 16 miles to a wreck.  Fished for a couple hours for cod or anything that would bite.  We wound up getting one small cod - 16in.  We had other bites, but too small to catch I guess...  Good day for a shake down.
